What is Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is one technique that may be used to help you to change your habits through intense focus. It may be used in conjunction with other techniques such as neuro-linguistic programming. At Premier NLP Life Coaching, we use the techniques that we determine to be the most effective methods to help our clients to attain their goals. In some cases, hypnotherapy may be one of the tools that we use.

What is hypnotherapy?

In hypnotherapy, a clinical hypnotherapist guides clients through hypnosis to achieve a state of concentration and focus or a trance. This state is similar to what it is like to be completely absorbed in your own thoughts, in music, in a movie, or in a book. When clients are in this trance-like state, they are able to turn their focus inward so that they can identify and tap into the resources and tools that they have inside of themselves to help them to make needed changes or to regain control over certain aspects of their lives.

When is hypnotherapy used?

There are many different applications for hypnotherapy, which is used together with other forms of treatment or therapy. It can be used to treat the following issues:

  • Phobias
  • Anxiety
  • Substance abuse
  • Tobacco addiction
  • Spontaneous behaviors that are undesirable
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Bad habits

Hypnotherapy may also help to improve learning disorders, sleep problems, relationship issues, and communication abilities. Hypnotherapy may help people to manage their pain and to help with skin problems, digestive issues, and the side effects of chemotherapy and pregnancy. Dentists may use hypnotherapy to help people to stop grinding their teeth or to control their fear of dental care.

What to expect during hypnotherapy

When you attend a hypnotherapy session, it will likely be performed in an environment that is therapeutic and calm. Your hypnotherapist will help by guiding you into a focused and highly relaxed state. You will be asked to think about situations and experiences in ways that might help you to change the way that you behave and think. Despite the popular misconceptions about hypnosis that you might see depicted in plays, books, or movies, you will not lose control of your self or be asleep or unconscious. While you will hear the suggestions of your hypnotherapist, you will decide whether you will act on them.

How hypnotherapy works

Hypnosis is a procedure or tool that helps to facilitate other types of treatments or techniques. It is not a form of psychotherapy or a treatment itself. A trained provider of clinical hypnosis can decide together with you whether hypnosis will be used together with other approaches. The length of your hypnotherapy sessions may vary and will depend on the particular problem that you are trying to address.

What are the benefits of hypnosis?

When you enter a hypnotic state, you may be able to open up more to suggestions and discussion. Hypnosis can help to improve the degree of success of other treatments that you might receive for the issue that you are having. Hypnosis may be particularly effective to help you to overcome bad habits such as overeating or smoking. It can also help some people who need help with crisis management, pain relief, and those who have severe symptoms.

Hypnosis can improve the success of other treatments for many conditions, including:

  • Phobias, fears, and anxiety
  • Sleep disorders
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Post-trauma anxiety
  • Grief and loss

What to look for in a hypnotherapist

When you are searching for a hypnotherapist, look for someone who is certified in hypnosis. You should also find a hypnotherapist with whom you feel comfortable working with. A good hypnotherapist should be someone who you feel like you can trust and be open with in your communication. If you do not click with someone or feel like you cannot trust him or her, hypnosis will be less likely to help you.

Misconceptions About NLP and Hypnosis

Misconceptions About NLP and Hypnosis

In one form or another, hypnosis has been used for thousands of years. Shamans used trances to instruct and heal people. Ancient Egyptians and Greeks also used something similar to a hypnotic trance with their dream temples of healing.

The understanding of hypnosis has greatly increased in the past few hundred years. Despite the increased knowledge, some people still have some misconceptions about the practice. Here is what Premier NLP Life Coaching thinks that you should know about some common myths that people have about hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

Hypnosis techniques are all the same

Some people believe that hypnosis is always the same. However, there are many different techniques that are used within the umbrella of hypnosis. The two primary approaches to hypnosis are called authoritarian techniques and permissive techniques.

Authoritarian techniques are instructive and direct, and they do not work for everyone.
Permissive techniques are subtle. The hypnotherapist works together with his or her client to utilize the client’s ability to see their issue to find a way forward. This type of hypnosis tries to identify strategies for how to change your script.

Subliminal messaging works while you are sleeping

Subliminal messages are information of which you are unaware. If you become aware of a message, it is not subliminal. If subliminal messaging worked while you were sleeping, and you fell asleep while watching a television program, you should know what happened in the show when you woke up.

When you are in a hypnotic trance, you are not sleeping. You might think that you were, but you were not. During a trance, you are in a state of awareness that is focused. it is similar to a state when you lose yourself in an event. A trance allows you to hear ideas and messages without being consciously aware of them. These messages then can help you to achieve behavioral change.

Some people cannot be hypnotized

Everyone has the ability to go into a trance. Every time that you find yourself concentrating away distractions, you are using a trance. An experienced hypnotherapist who takes time to learn about you can use his or her range of skills to help you while you are in a hypnotic state.

Hypnosis does require your cooperation. If you do not want to be hypnotized, you can tell yourself that you are unable to be hypnotized. It will not happen when you tell yourself these types of messages. However, there is little point in seeing a hypnotherapist if you are determined for the process not to work.

A hypnotherapist makes you go into a trance

A hypnotherapist does not force you into a trance. Instead, he or she helps you through a process of self-hypnosis. A hypnotherapist helps you to go into a trance state, but he or she will not make you do anything strange. Hypnosis is not a form of mind control that the hypnotherapist has over you.

You lose control when you are in a hypnotic trance

Some people are afraid of hypnotherapy because they worry that they will lose control.
They might worry that they will tell their innermost secrets when they are in a trance. Some people also fear hypnosis because they dislike having someone else making decisions for them.

People who prefer to be in control are often good subjects for hypnosis because they have detailed information that allows the hypnotherapist to gain greater insight into their situations. This can help a hypnotherapist to identify the most effective ways to help.

Winning in Life and business How hypnosis can help

Winning in Life and business: How hypnosis can help

Many people are held back from what they want to achieve by negative thoughts in both their conscious and unconscious minds. It is possible for people to reframe how they think and feel by getting in touch with their unconscious minds. Hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming offer two methods of tapping into your unconscious, allowing you to change your perspective to one that is more positive. At Premier NLP Life Coaching, we help people to overcome their negative thoughts so they can fully embrace life and accomplish their goals. The story of Reese Evans, an entrepreneur, illustrates how hypnosis and NLP can help you win at life.

Reese Evans before hypnotherapy and NLP

Reese Evans, a twenty-something entrepreneur, reports that she found herself stuck working in retail, a job that she disliked. Her search for a new job was lasting much longer than she had anticipated. At that time, Evans states that everything in her life seemed to be negative.

Evans said that she would awaken in the morning each day telling herself how much she hated her job, her clothing, and her appearance. She realized that her focus was on everything that she didn’t want. She worked in a job in which she felt like she wasn’t respected and at which she was underpaid and overworked.

Evans said her dissatisfaction with her life and her job at that time was a reflection of what was going on in her inner world. Her thoughts were self-sabotaging, and she believed that she simply could not be good enough. Her self-sabotaging thoughts repeated themselves over and over in her mind and negatively impacted the way that she viewed both her job and her relationships. Evans says that her actions mirrored her negative thoughts.

Evans decided to explore from where her negative thoughts had originated and went in for a hypnosis session. Following her session, Evans learned that her fear and anxiety about meeting people and about money stemmed from her childhood. Those fears were now impacting her adult life. She said her fears made her afraid to ask her boss for a raise because she was worried that she would be fired if she did. She says that she did not recognize her own worth.

During childhood, Evans watched her parents argue over child support. That translated in her adulthood of her believing that talking about money or demanding a raise, she would be hated or fired.

Today, Evans teaches NLP, hypnotherapy, and emotional freedom techniques. She says that people are in a near-constant state of hypnosis up to age seven because they have not fully developed their conscious minds. This causes young children to soak up everything that goes on around them in their environments.

How Evans changed her life

Evans recognized that she needed to change the way she thought to become more confident when she met new people and to overcome her obstacles with money. She said that she would experience anticipatory stress before a social situation and would tell herself that no one would like her. She would then act withdrawn and feel awkward, which was not inviting to others. Her negative thoughts led her to the outcomes that she did not want.

To change her negative frame of mind, Evans began to ask herself whether a negative thought was in line with who she wanted to be. If it wasn’t, she would then think the opposite thought and start believing it instead. She says that she realized that she is in control of her thoughts, and she has the power to decide what to think and what she will base her life on.

After overcoming her negativity, Evans started her own company called Yes Supply. She chose that name because she wanted people to understand that if they know that the answer would be yes, they would be clearer about what they asked for.

Evans’s company has a membership site and offers daily affirmations. There is also a coaching certification that guides people on how they can become coaches. The company originated from when she journaled about what her ideal career and life would look like. She then started a blog, and the feedback that she received led her to create her company.

Understanding your Mind - Conscious and Unconscious Processing

Understanding your Mind – Conscious and Unconscious Processing

Your conscious and your unconscious mind both play an outsized role in the choices that you make and in whether you are able to achieve your goals. One of the goals of neuro-linguistic programming is to unpack these concepts and show you how to use your knowledge of both to effect positive change. At Premier NLP Life Coaching, we have helped many people to get in touch with their conscious and unconscious minds and to change their thinking patterns so that they are able to be more successful.

In many cases, people try to get control over their problems with their conscious minds without including their unconscious minds when they try to make a change. This is a mistake that should be corrected. The change will be lasting if you are able to involve your unconscious mind.

Your conscious mind

Your conscious mind does not have as many processing abilities as your unconscious mind does. It is dominated by partitions that have to do with language. Your conscious mind is a representation of the internal map that you are able to consciously access.

Your conscious mind may have a running commentary about events as they happen and to derive meaning from the text that you read. It works in a logical manner and prefers things that make sense to you.

Your unconscious mind

Your unconscious mind works in the background and includes everything of which you are not consciously aware. It understands everything about the system that makes up you. Compared to your conscious mind, your unconscious mind has great abilities to process information and absorbs millions of pieces of sensory data from your nervous system every second. All of your past experiences are contained in your unconscious mind. Your habits, feelings, and sensations are the ways in which your unconscious mind is able to express itself. It contains a huge potential for change.

The six-step reframe

People who are trained in neuro-linguistic programming are able to use a process called the six-step reframe to change their unconscious minds. You can work with an involuntary signal from your unconscious mind such as pain together with intention. Your body has a terrific ability to heal. When you are able to communicate well with your unconscious mind, you can access its ability to heal.

You can work with your unconscious mind in multiple ways, including metaphors, involuntary signals, hypnosis, behavioral tasks, metaphors, and dreams. When you use these or other processes, you can engage your unconscious mind while also working with your conscious mind. You can think about your conscious mind as your organizer and your unconscious mind as your provider. Your conscious mind asks your unconscious mind for the resources that it needs to create your experiences in a specific context. When the communication from your conscious mind is clear, your unconscious mind will then deliver the resources that have been requested.

The conscious and unconscious minds are simply labels for different processes that happen in your nervous system. When you establish good communication between these different processes, it will be easier for you to solve problems and to create different and better experiences.

Your nervous system

There are two primary components of your nervous system, including the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Your CNS is made up of all of the networks of your spinal cord and brain. Your PNS includes the nerves that extend outward from your CNS to enervate the other parts of your body.

Neural cells, called neurons, communicate with each other. Neurons in your CNS communicate with neurons in your PNS through electrochemical signaling. Likewise, communication occurs in the reverse. Your thoughts are experienced in both your brain and in your body, and the sensations that you feel in your body are communicated to your brain.

Many modern psychological approaches place more emphasis on your conscious mind and its thinking processes while failing to incorporate the importance of your unconscious mind. Approaching problems by emphasizing thinking through them is not very effective because doing so ignores the role of your unconscious mind.

Your work in neuro-linguistic programming can teach you methods that you can use to improve the communication between your conscious mind and your unconscious mind. When you improve your ability to communicate between your two minds, you can make the changes that you want. NLP is an effective method to help you to make positive changes in a much quicker and lasting way than traditional therapeutic approaches. Why Nuero Linguistic Programming Works So Fast

Neuro-Linguistic Programming recognizes that all behaviors occur in patterns and are rooted in the sub-conscious. Another tenet of NLP is that we are always communicating. The person you communicate with more then anyone else is YOU! And the single most important factor that affects the way we think and feel is the deep structure of that “internal dialogue” of communication of you to you. With this information, a qualified NLP practitioner can help his students to influence behavioral patterns through the use of specific language changes and other types of communication changes (words only account for 7% of our ability to communicate) to enable a person to “recode” information that is stored in their subconscious. This results in new and better patterns of behavior. This also radically affects how people see and feel about themselves in a very positive and healthy way. Because these people now value themselves at a much higher level, they often go on to make significantly more money, many get married or get into healthy fulfilling relationships and go on to lead rich, fulfilled lives. Neuro-Linguistic Programming often incorporates hypnosis and self-hypnosis to help achieve the change (or “programming”) that the client wants to change. I have personally seen hundreds of people stop doing depression and or anxiety with lasting results after only a few sessions. The results you can expect with a good NLP practitioner are nothing short of amazing.

Understanding hypnosis

Another word for hypnosis is trance. Being in trance is a very natural state. We go in and out of trance multiple times everyday. Most people never even notice it. But did you ever have a time when you were driving and you missed your exit? Or worse yet, you drive to your destination, turn off the ignition, and not remember driving there? Believe it or not, that is a very common experience.

All new learning happens in some state of trance. If you watch someone’s eyes as your are speaking to them, there eyes will move in different directions. They may look up, side to side or look down. That is know as eye accessing cues and is indicative of trance state that last only seconds in most cases.

There are deeper, more prolonged states, and deeper learning happens in these states. When people go into these states, I will often guide the conversation helping them to make new distinctions by disassociating them from the experience. In other words, I will ask them to close their eyes and make a picture or movie of themselves experiencing their “stuck state”. This allows for some space between the perosn and the experience. This new perspective often is enough for the person to find a new resourceful way of handling the challenges of their life. Often as the open their eyes, they tell me,”I didnt think I was that deep.”( in trance) The reason they say that is because they were completely aware of outside noises such as;phone ringing, sounds from outside, music in the backgound etc.

Hypnosis is a very powerful tool that is often misunderstood and subsequently feared. But going into a light guided trance is a powerful way to move yourself rapidly forward in life. I have personally  seen multiple people who had suffered from anxiety, many for years, let go of it in a single session.
