5 ways to boost your state management skills
There are five steps that you can take to build your state management skills. By working through these steps, you can start the process of managing your states more effectively.
1. Identify your state
Over the next month, try to keep track of all of your states and write them down. Begin now by noticing the state that you are presently in. Ask yourself the following questions to help you with this process:
- How do you physically feel?
- What is currently occupying your thoughts?
- What emotions are you feeling?
- What body sensations are your emotions causing?
After you identify the state that you are in, consider how it either empowers or limits you. Do you like who you are in your current state? If you do not, you can begin to work on changing your state.
2. Identify the triggers
The next step is for you to identify all of the things that trigger you and write them down. Track each state that you identify to the moment that it starts. Some examples of triggers might include someone else’s action, your own action, or a memory.
3. Neutralize the un-resourceful triggers
If you have experienced a negative trigger, don’t ignore it. It is important for you to deal with whatever it is that is bothering you. Confronting your negative trigger can help you to clear it away. If your negative state arises from a trauma that you have experienced in the past, think about what the state does for you. In many cases, people find that they enter negative states because of past trauma in order to protect themselves from perceived threats. This allows you to identify the issues that you should address.
4. Build a foundation of positive triggers into your daily routine
Think about and identify the states that help to empower you. Then, identify the triggers that lead to them. Consider whether your positive states have a common theme. Then, create a weekly schedule that includes your positive triggers. Try to begin each day with one of your positive triggers, and add two more during the day. Plant a beneficial trigger during your evening so that you can end your day in a positive state.
5. Advanced state management
After you have learned basic state management, you can then move on to more advanced state management. You can do this by making the following changes.
Change your mental image – Your states rely on the mental images that you hold of circumstances or objects. Using your senses, change the mental images that you make. For example, if you have a mental picture of a threat, try reducing its size.
Change your physiology – Making small physical changes can have an impact on how you feel. Try to use good posture, Engage in physical exercise and breathing exercises, and try to smile.
Change your self-talk – Listen to the self-talk that you engage in, and try to keep it positive and uplifting.
